I had a student press the cancel button a little too hard today and it got stuck in a ‘down’ position and wouldn’t work any more. You could still run programs as per normal, but you couldn’t exit any menus or do a software shutdown of the EV3. It turns out there is a little piece of curved metal under each button which gives it the ‘springiness’ to pop back up, and this particular bit of metal had shifted under the plastic cover. Taking the cover off is as simple as undoing 4 screws in the battery compartment and then a gentle prod gets the metal spring back in position. Not sure how long it’ll last, but it was an easy fix.

I tried this on a stuck top button, and so far it works. It does seem like a fragile fix however. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I am having this problem with 6 of mine. I googled the problem and saw your video. I am going to fix them now. Thnak you so much for posting this.
LEGO customer support shipped me a replacement part after I sent them a complaint. So, if you are not able to fix it, there is still some chance to get a replacement for it. I hope the new one will last a bit longer (the original failed in less then a year of not so frequent usage).
Same problem with buttons. I seems like it is made intentionally to fail since there is no way that the foil doesn't start to peel off after some time. Has anyone a suggestion which kind of foil could replace the original one?
Thanks for sharing. I just had the same problem and googled to your site. This is very helpful.
However, I could not remove the screws. and could not open the box to fix the problem.
Can you please share what screwdriver you used to fix this problem? The screw head has a very weird shape and very small.
Any information will be appreciated.
Fixed – thanks for the video!!! My school program is saved from disaster again.
Thank you! I use it in my research lab and the center button had the same prob. Now its fixed.
So glad it worked for you 🙂
Thank you for your post. I have had EV3s in my classroom for two and a half years with no problem. I got a new brick for my daughter's FLL team and in a month I had a problem with the center button. Your post was perfect. A quick fix, but as time goes we'll see if it is a long term fix. Thank you!
Thanx a ton you saved my day. Had similar problem could fix it due to this video of yours, regards
